The beneficial effects of milk thistle are attributed to the flavolignans silybin, silydianin, and silychristin (silycristin), collectively known as silymarin. Silymarin is an antioxidant compound found in milk thistle seeds. People have traditionally used milk thistle to support liver and gallbladder health. Silymarin protects liver cells through several mechanisms. First, it stabilizes membrane permeability by inhibiting lipid peroxidation, helping the liver maintain levels of its own protective antioxidant glutathione.
